⭐ TROOP 6 BSA

TROOP 6, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

In 2022, Troop Six continued its full scope of Scouting activities, including: weekly meetings held in
Hunter Hall, seven overnight camping trips to locations throughout the greater Bay Area, a December
sleepover “camp” at St. John’s, a February day trip to the mountains for fun in the snow, and a June
annual dinner/alumni reunion held at St. John’s.

In the summer, the troop was able to run a full three-week summer camp program at Utica Reservoir in
the Stanislaus National Forest. The camp has no permanent structures and is set up from scratch each
year. On the last day of camp, the site is returned to nature with the hope that there is no sign of us having been there.

Later in the summer, a group of parent volunteers and Troop Six Scouts traveled to New Mexico for a week-long wilderness trek at the Philmont Scout Ranch in the Cimarron Mountains. Mid-year, Troop Six welcomed new Scoutmaster Alison Wellsfry to take over the job from Tom Fairchild. Alison is a longtime Scouting volunteer who has been an active staff member in Troop Six for many years and whose son, Nathan, recently became one of the troop’s newest Eagle Scouts.

In addition to Nathan, three other Troop Six Scouts became Eagle Scouts in 2022. Beyond mastering basic Scouting skills and earning at least 21 merit badges, Eagle Scouts must also demonstrate leadership within the troop and provide community service through a substantial service project.

In 2022, Troop Six Eagle projects served St. John’s by clearing ivy, planting drought-resistant landscaping, and adding a bench to the church grounds along College Ave. There are currently 24 active Scouts in the troop. The troop is led by the older Scouts with guidance from the troop staff and troop committee.

The troop was started by St. John’s in 1929 and has met continuously since then. St. John’s holds the charter for the troop. There is a dedicated group of parents serving on the staff and troop committee. I am active in the troop and serve as liaison between church and troop and am happy to answer any questions you may have.
