April 7, 2010 Newsletter
Hi all,
I want to express
how much I enjoyed Easter Morning!
It
was a Joy and very powerful. I particularly want to thank Todd Jolly
for his
great direction and music leadership. Todd is kind, smart,
theologically sound,
flexible and a great professional. I really enjoy working
with him. Leon,
as usual, was powerful. Thanks to Nellie and Mark Coplan for
picking up
flowers, setting tables and a host of other things. Fred
organized the
egg hunt. Karma lined up food and a bunch of people helped bring food,
set up
and clean up. Kathy Pratt painted our "tomb" and Jason and I had a
good time shaping it all into a worshipful set. And terrific,
the bells,
choir. Tamara, Linda, and the kids all came together under Todd's
leadership
for a great celebration of the resurrection of the Christ. Awesome!
Semi-secret
news flash: A birthday Party for Feliciana

house:

don't think I can keep the whole thing secret but I don't want
Feliciana to
know how big this party will be. So don't tell her you are
coming, but
come! No worries about gifts,
just
come to show my wonderful wife a great birthday.
Love,
Max

Forums (Note
changes from
previous listings)
It
has just sort of happened that our Forums for the next couple of months
are
devoted almost entirely to Social Justice themes. Perhaps because of
how Bruce
Willats ended our series of classes on the atonement by a call for
action as a
response to however we understand God's work in Jesus Christ this is
action we
take or action we enable others to take.

13 Anti-Semitism:
An old topic that some of us feel Christians have never adequately
addressed, but comes today in new forms as well as old
ones. We will
be guided by Pastor Max
and Glen Hauer of Jewish Voice for Peace. Glen
Hauer was a founding board member
of Jewish Voice For Peace, and has
played
numerous roles in that organization for the last ten years. He has
participated in several
international Healing from War workshops in Warsaw
and the former death camps at
Auschwitz and Birkinau, Poland. He now
serves as country coordinator of
that event for the western United States.
He worked for fifteen years as
civil rights attorney, and is an active member
of his San Francisco Synagogue.
Talk: The system of anti-Semitism: how
anti-
Jewish oppression serves
power. We'll
explore the system of
anti-Semitism
paying particular attention to the
struggle for peace and justice in Israel/
Palestine. How does this system
support the status quo? How can gentile
allies help end it?
July
11* Report
back from our Overture Advocate at
General Assembly.
*
These three sessions might be seen as ways to get in touch with
everything
behind reaction this summer to various overtures making their way to
General
Assembly. If we want to enter into dialogue with our Jewish
and Muslim
brothers and sisters we will need to be prepared in heart, mind, and
soul.

What to do if you think you’re having a heart attack
while you are alone? Recommended,
tested procedure:
cough CPR. If
you suddenly experience severe pain in
your chest which starts to radiate out into
your arm and up into your jaw, and if you begin to
feel faint, you may
as little as 10 seconds before losing
consciousness. However,
you can help yourself
by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep
breath should be taken before each cough, and
the cough must be deep and
prolonged, as that which produces sputum from
deep inside the chest. A
breath and a cough must
be repeated about every two seconds without let up until
help arrives, or until
the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep
breaths get oxygen into lungs and coughing
movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The
squeezing pressure on
the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack
victims
can get to a hospital. Pass it on!
